Setiap tanggal  9 Maret, Indonesia memperingati Hari Musik Nasional untuk merayakan keberagaman dan kekayaan musik dalam budaya bangsa. Momen ini dimanfaatkan untuk mengenang salah satu tokoh penting dalam sejarah musik nasional Indonesia, yakni W.R. Soepratman.

Wage Rudolf Soepratman, atau yang lebih dikenal sebagai W.R. Soepratman, adalah seorang komponis, musisi, dan pahlawan nasional Indonesia yang lahir pada tanggal 9 Maret 1903. Namanya sudah sering terdengar sebab ia merupakan orang yang menciptakan lagu kebangsaan Indonesia, ‘Indonesia Raya’. 

Adanya peran besar W.R. Soepratman dalam meciptakan lagu kebangsaan ‘Indonesia Raya’, menjadi suatu identitas musikal bangsa, serta menjadi simbol semangat perjuangan dan kebangsaan. Sehingga lagu ini terus diwariskan dan dinyanyikan di berbagai acara nasional.

Maka dari itu, bertepatan dengan hari lahir W.R. Soepratman ditetapkan menjadi Hari Musik Nasional dikarenakan jasanya yang terus diwariskan sampai saat ini. Hal ini diputuskan melalui Keputusan Presiden No. 10 Tahun 2013 oleh Presiden Indonesia ke-6, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Momen ini tidak hanya menjadi hari untuk mengekspresikan sesuatu melalui musik, tetapi juga sebagai penghormatan terhadap sejarah dan pengorbanan bangsa. Melalui peringatan Hari Musik Nasional, Indonesia terus menunjukkan bahwa keberagaman musiknya adalah bagian integral dari kekayaan budaya yang harus dijaga dan dihargai oleh setiap generasi.
