Setiap tahunnya, Indonesia merayakan Hari Peduli Sampah Nasional pada tanggal 21 Februari. Sebuah perayaan yang kini menjadi tonggak sejarah dalam menjalani upaya bersama, menuju lingkungan yang bersih dan lestari. 

Perjalanan ini diawali dengan mengenang tragedi longsornya Tempat Pembuangan Akhir (TPA) di Leuwigajah, Kecamatan  Cimahi Selatan, Kota Cimahi, Jawa Barat, pada 21 Februari 2005. Tragedi tersebut terjadi disaat intensitas hujan yang tengah tinggi, gunungan sampah setinggi 60 meter dengan panjang 200 meter longsor, diduga karena adanya ledakan gas metana. Akibatnya, puluhan rumah tertimbun dan 157 jiwa melayang karena tergulung longsoran sampah dari TPA tersebut.

Sebelum tragedi tersebut terjadi, TPA Leuwigajah memang menggunakan sistem open dumping, yang berarti sampah dibuang dan ditumpuk begitu saja. Sistem ini dikatakan tidak efektif, sehingga manajemen pengelolaan yang selama ini mereka terapkan, dapat dikatakan buruk.

Dari tragedi tersebut, Kementerian Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan (KLHK) Republik Indonesia menetapkan setiap tanggal 21 Februari yakni diperingati sebagai Hari Peduli Sampah Nasional. Dengan adanya Hari Peduli Sampah Nasional, diharapkan semua dapat mengingat bahwa upaya penanganan dan pengelolaan sampah menjadi perhatian yang cukup utama serta harus melibatkan seluruh komponen masyarakat.
